A Guide to Selecting Wine Glasses

A Guide to Selecting Wine Glasses
03/12/2017
admin

Today it is recognized that part of the enjoyment in having a glass of wine depends on the glass. In any store you will find a wide range: large, small, tall, narrow ... There is an explanation behind so much diversity, although you may not want to invest in the full range. However, there are certain elements that you have to take into account when choosing a glass of wine, whether you are looking for it for daily use or if it is more expensive.

The first thing to look for is clear glass: avoid colors, patterns and engravings. You will want to observe and enjoy the density and color of the wine. Second, look for glasses with the tulip-shaped chalice and the rounded rim inward. This design allows the aromas to be concentrated and you will be able to better enjoy the wine bouquet.

Another tip, especially when you're looking for everyday glasses, is to make sure the rim is relatively thin - it makes the wine taste better. And therefore the most suitable material is glass. Wine doesn't taste as good on porcelain, ceramic, or plastic.

The size of the glass has to be large enough to hold a good quantity of wine without exceeding a quarter or a third of the glass. Better a large quantity of wine in a larger glass than the same quantity in a small glass filled to the brim. Why? So you can turn the wine in the glass, releasing the aromas and flavors and when you breathe in, you will enjoy all the nuances of the liquid.

Apart from the size, the cups can have different shapes. Some wine lovers consider that each type of wine corresponds to a specific type of glass. However, the most important thing is that the edge is rounded inwards. As we said above, you don't need the full range of glasses and you can start with three basic types:

- Large glasses for red wines, such as our Priorato de Razamonde or Alter red, with a large cup that allows the aromas to spread. Also with red wines, maintaining the temperature is not so important.

- A medium-sized glass for white wines, such as our Alter or Priorato de Razamonde, because they are served a smaller quantity, so that it does not heat up in the glass.

- A glass of champagne, designed to highlight the bubbles.

With that, you can start enjoying a good Ribeiro.
